Collecting Plastic Salt and Peppers

Vintage Melamine Shakers on Etsy
These lovelies available at Cedar Run Vintage on Etsy.

There is a whole world out there of vintage plastic salt and pepper shakers just waiting to be found or collected. So many varieties, and some extremely collectible and rare.  You never know what may crop up out of someone's attic or cabinet.  For instance, these lovelies may have been purchased for sale individually in stores. You just never know.  What does their history tell us? Without investigation or research, we may never know!

Melmac Shakers
This rare set is available on Etsy at the CedarRunVintage shop for $50.
For a short time, Texas Ware melamine introduced a line of ice cream cups and sherberts with melamine bases. These salt and peppers I spotted on Etsy (below) look almost identical. It would be strange to find out these were a sample or rarity of sorts--did someone put the lids on, could they have been mini shebert cup samples?  Especially since they don't really match. Or were they made this way, and just look like the Texas Ware stuff? You just never know really, what you may find n the world of salt and peppers.

Then certain designs, patterns, figural shakers can go for lots of money depending on who made them and how scarce they are.  Let's not mention salt and peppers make cute gifts and novelties for that special someone. These Venus styled figural shakers (below) are a real treat for only $7.50 at ShopatGeris on Etsy.  These would be a great topic of conversation wouldn't they?  The front of the box says Gay and they date back to 1948!

For the sake of all things plastic fantastic, I just have to add in that sometimes the plastic maker will be a part of history. Look at these older and harder to find vintage plastics  dating back to 1929-1940s era from Carvanite. (below) which had ties to Eastman Kodak. These are pure deco styled and look much like a bakelite material. Just lovely in color and preserved all these years.

Carvanite Plastic
These are available at CollectMemories on Etsy at $55 a true gem in the vintage plastic world.
Whatever kind you like, the possibilities are endless. There's a whole world of salt and pepper shakers out there just waiting for you to be had. Especially for the collector who likes to keep things under control, a small curio on the wall may be just the ticket.

Orange Toaster Kitchen Plastic Fantastic

vintage plastics
Hello, what's this? An orange toaster from Hunter's Kitchen on Etsy.
Orange is making a comeback. I wasn't ever really a fan of orange, until now.  I grew up in the 1970's and Mom really overdid the orange-lime-yellow thing. I guess that's why I thought orange was "gross." Of course I was still in shock from the old 1960's kitchen we had which was olive-brown-drab so the orange should have been a nice change for me.....but for some reason I didn't like orange.  Now it's sort of growing on me. I especially like the orange and white combinations.

It's no surprise that everyone loves Ashton Kutcher since his big takeover on Two and a Half Men.  Of course you may remember "That Seventies Show" and perhaps if we asked Kitty Forman she wouldn't mind having these items in her retro kitchen.

What do you think ?  Is Orange in, or out?

Vintage Goodies Etsy Shop Loaded With Melmac and TexasWare

Vintage Goodies, how I adore thee!
These saucers she has are pretty hard to find, I think they could be called Fantasy...

Lisa Price has a real eye for cool melmac, in fact, her Etsy shop Vintage Goodies has proof of that.  She's from Grand Rapids, MI and opened her Etsy shop in 2006.  She lists her new plastic and melamine finds under the "Melmac Attack" section.  It's definitely worth a look-see....her prices are fair and good bargains are waiting to be had!  Here's some previews of what you may find!

Just lovely..

I was shocked to see Purple Texas ware style bowls in her shop.  This is a Texas Ware Design.
I was astonished to see so much Texasware Purple stocked, because normally the only "purple" I see is the Marcrest/Royalon Corsage Patten (see it here.)  The good thing about Lisa's shop, is you can buy a few pieces here and there to build your set, and assemble it over time! This is a more affordable option than investing in a whole set at once.  Plus, if you only need the plates, or mugs, you've come to the right place.

I love solid purple melmac!

Lisa explains, "I just LOVE a good estate sale. I love to reuse things from the past because they are made so much better than things today, and they are much more interesting. From the color to the design they evoke a feeling and often a story. I am particularly fond of items from the 1950s and focus on 40s-60s wares in my shop."

A sweet little set of cups and saucers. Love the styling on these handles!

Lisa's shop has more than just melmac, in fact, it's cool of all kinds of great linens, textiles, aprons, kitchenalia, mod things and more!  She explains, "These finds already have a story to tell, and I think it is amazing to walk into someone's life and see what books they read and what clothes they wore. I am offering things that I like but either don't quite fit my decor or I just know is a good find."

Her retro style block printed towels are a must have as a melmac-go with. What great gift ideas!

She has a second shop, Art Goodies, which has block-printed towels, great for any vintage kitchen or baking diva! The designs here are amazing.  They are cute, stylish, and the best part, handmade with love!   Nothing like adding that....to this:

SO MODERN!

Beautiful Boontonware.

So I wonder, why the love of vintage?  Lisa says, Vintage is also a way of shopping green. Use something fun and interesting from the past, it creates a unique and fun look while being nice to the environment! :)"    Kudos to you Lisa, ding ding, I'm adding your shop to the sidebar, YOU ROCK!
